Crete is the largest of all the Greek islands, with a long and varied history, it is probably the birthplace of western civilization. The island has many facets from the hot and wild coastline to the luxurious agricultural plateaus. The island is divided into four provinces, Chania in the extreme west, Rethymnon next, then Heraklion the current capital and finally Lassithi in the east of Crete. The north of the island provides some wonderful holiday venues but has become the most developed part of the island.
