There are five beaches , Kalomakania, the main beach which is blue flag accredited with its long sandy beach and shallow waters makes it the ideal safe place for children, 2 smaller coved beaches, then Diaskari and Lagada beach. The main beach offers a range of water sport facilities during the summer months.
Makrigialos has many restaurants and tavernas which serves both traditional and international dishes, mini-markets, and souvenir shops. There is a regular bus service to both Sitia and Ierapetra where there are many supermarkets, restaurants, tavernas, kafenions, bars and street markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays. There are many traditional villages all within a 30 minute drive.
